This might just get me fired. Why? Because the management at Grand Incentives insists upon anonymity regarding this very special cause. But I'm just posting on my little blog. Who really reads this, anyway?

So here's the secret scoop: One night a month, every month, for YEARS, the staff at Grand Incentives (GI) contributes cash, but more importantly, time and good will, to feed the homeless of Sarasota. Many GI employees live paycheck to paycheck, juggling family and financial responsibilities. No matter. The third Thursday of each month, they rally... generously giving up a portion of their hard-earned money and a big block of precious time to nurture those in our community who are in greater need.

Christmastime delivers not only food, but bags and bags of clothing and other items that our employees donate to "give back". They would, and have literally, given the coats off their backs to provide warmth to a homeless person shivering from the biting cold night air.

Yet the definition of an ideal Thanksgiving is changing for many. One of the great things about living in Sarasota, Florida, is that we are just below the state's frost line (Tampa). This means I get to see the most amazing birds and wildlife in my very own backyard. Sandhill cranes and other intriguing varieties of birds - including roseatte spoonbills (Florida's "real pink bird"), all species of ducks, tortoises, fish, armadillos, possums - and some strange creature I WISH I had caught on film last week. Looked like a sea lion scampering across my yard. (We live on a small canal.) I have no idea what it was!

4 Tips to be a Greener Restaurant Guest

Restaurants nationwide are “going greener,” and consumers are increasingly looking for ways to do the same when dining out. The National Restaurant Association offers these tips for being an eco-conscious restaurant guest:

1. Pass on the water. If you plan to order a beverage with your meal and not drink the complimentary glass of water, simply let your server know. If one out of four restaurant patrons did the same, it would help conserve more than 25 million gallons of water in a year.

2. Skip the straws and utensils. If you don’t need a straw to enjoy your beverage, pass on it. More than 500 million disposable straws are used in the U.S. every day – enough to fill 9,300 school buses! And, when getting takeout or delivery, tell restaurant staff that you don’t need disposable silverware. This will help divert waste from landfills.

3. Bring your own. Use your own reusable tote bag for takeout orders rather than plastic or paper bags, and bring a travel mug for that morning cup of coffee – some restaurants will even give you a discount for it!

4. Consider alternative transportation. Car-pool, walk, ride a bike or take public transportation to your favorite restaurant. Each vehicle in America uses about 600 gallons of gas per year. That's lot of emissions. And with rising gas prices, these alternatives double as budget-friendly solutions.

Oysters Camille

This award-winning dish is even tastier than it is attractive! It was among the featured goodies at celebrity-chef Camille Manella Johnston's annual Mardi Gras Party . Here's the prized recipe:

1 quart shucked fresh oysters
5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon Italian herb seasoning
4 crumbled bay leaves
1/2 teaspoon dried coarse ground thyme
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 bunch chopped green onion
1 large diced green bell pepper
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 cup Progresso bread crumbs, Italian style
4 tablespoons butter (my change - Camille's recipe calls for Fleischmann's margarine)
1/4 cup thinly sliced lemon peel
10 drops red Tabasco sauce
3/4 pound crumbled, crisp bacon
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
course ground salt
freshly ground black pepper

Line bottom of 10 x 14-inch glass pan with olive oil. Place drained oysters flatly on olive oil. Salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle evenly over oysters the following: basil, Italian herb seasoning, bay leaves, thyme, lemon juice, green onions, green pepper, garlic and 1/2 cup Italian bread crumbs.

Cut butter (or margarine) into about 9 pats and place evenly over oysters. Spread evenly over oysters the following: lemon peel, 3/4 of the crisp bacon, mozzarella cheese, Tabasco sauce and rest of bacon. Top with remaining 1/2-cup bread crumbs. Bake uncovered at 325 degrees for 45 minutes. Serves 6 to 8 as hors d'oeuvres or 4 to 6 as an entree.

His popular Winter/Spring Lesson Luncheon cooking classes series begins Friday, January 28 and runs through Wednesday, May 11. Featured will be visits to Spain, South America and New Orleans as well as items from some of his most popular classes, a sumptuous Sunday brunch and three of Euphemia Haye’s favorite menu items.

Space is limited and reservations are required. Classes are held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and include wine pairings, fresh banana bread and Euphemia Haye’s signature coffee. From denizens of the deep to divas of the media, the IFWTWA Conference at Sea on Holland America's ms Eurodam was a multi-sensory delight. Enlightening workshops and wine tastings at sea punctuated ports of call that included Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Thomas and Half Moon Cay. Beautiful, historic and sizzling hot meccas all.

Of course, the cruise ship is a destination in itself, complete with culinary school, computer workshops, fitness center, luxury spa, theatre, nightclub, casino and more.

I'M BACK!

Literally and figuratively. Returned from a cruise on Holland America - not a "vacation" - instead, a Writers Conference at Sea. Working on a really cool slide show that will hopefully give you a great glimpse into both the work and play, including pics of our ports of call: Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Thomas and Half Moon Cay. We, members of The International Food Wine & Travel Association, were graciously hosted by each respective tourism entity. While on board Holland America's MS Eurodam, we were privy to private press conferences where we learned much about what goes on behind the scenes. Of course, our writer's workshops and seminars were outstanding. This photo was taken our last night... there were about 40 in our group, but here you see the die-hards, the "hard-core" social butterflies (including me!) that wanted to spend time together until the very end of the cruise. Have been dealing with some interesting personal issues since we returned, or would have posted sooner. No matter, more posts forthcoming!

Yesterday I attended my first luncheon meeting of YES - Young Entreneurs of Sarasota, a positive oriented volunteer educational support group for entrepreneurs. It was awesome! Entreneurs share success strategies every Tuesday; all ages are welcome (100 years or younger), there are no membership applications and no dues. Relationship building starts 11:30; lunch 11:45; YES workshop starts at 12:15 and ends at 1:15.

Riviera Maya and All That Jazz!

We are Mexico-bound for music in Paradise! The annual Riviera Maya Jazz Festival takes place this year November 25-28, when Riviera Maya will host the best national and international jazz acts of all times.

Patrick and I will be there, front and center, our bare toes buried in the cool sands of Mexico's shores. The concerts take place at night, oceanside and under the stars. Among the many featured and legendary musicians will be Al Jarreau, Herbie Hancock, Spyro Gyra and Sergio Mendes. What a way to spend Thanksgiving!

Jaden's Kitchen Just Got Steamier!

Last night I attended the book-signing for Jaden Hair's much lauded, "The Steamy Kitchen Cookbook" at The Polo Grille on Main Street at Lakewood Ranch. Jaden was in sparkling form, as always, and received the throngs of eager wanna-be Asian cooks with warmth and grace. Among those in attendance were Sarasota socialites Carroll deCarle, Mac and Jen deCarle and Patrick Fowler.

What a privilege to be among the volunteers at the Empty Bowls Luncheon at Lakewood Ranch. The amazing event was held over two days, Thursday and Friday, October 15-16. It was a delicious melange of art, food, music, commaraderie, and most importantly, charity.

“Empty Bowls” is an international project to fight hunger, personalized by artists and service organizations on a community level. Events are currently held in many areas in the United States and Canada, often in conjunction with the United Nations sponsored World Food Day, October 16th. Guests choose a handmade bowl to take home and pick a soup donated by local restaurants to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in our community.

In exchange for the meal and the bowl, guests contribute a $20 donation. One hundred percent of each meal's proceeds benefit The Food Bank of Manatee.

Recently returned from a not-so-ordinary sailing trip throughout the British Virgin Islands. Of course, the islands are gorgeous. Met today with dear high school chum, Vicki Romand McPhail, at the Columbia Restaurant at The Pier in St. Petersburg, FL. Her beautiful (inside and out) mom, Dot Acierno, was there too. Our waiter, Drew,

was charming and oh-so-accommodating. Service, food, views... all was fab. But the best part was reconnecting with Vicki and her mom. Vicki is embarking on a new venture, a website that will deliver the best that the Palm Beach area (the site of one of her many homes) has to offer. Catch the buzz at "Menu Bee" online soon.

Cleveland Rocks !

Who knew the city was so charming? The North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA) picked a great destination for the annual conference. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was a fabulous highlight - and not only because hubby and I won the couples dance contest there! Besides the entertaining and educational permanent displays, a special Bruce Springsteen exhibit is on view through spring 2010.

It was marvelous to see old friends and make new ones. The workshops and presentations were invaluable - now I actually know WHY I am blogging, tweeting, facebooking and on Linkedin. (Not to mention truly understanding the significance of having my own website, codiannefowler.com :)

The "green" Marketplace afforded us the opportunity to literally collect gigabytes of information. One more note, if you go to Cleveland, a visit to The House of Blues is a must!

The Wedding Planner?

In less than two days I arranged for my friends a lovely room on Siesta Key at the newly renovated Tropical Sun Beach Resort , a wedding venue and brunch at Ophelia's on the Bay, and a wedding officiant, Carolyn Olson of Casual Weddings by Olson & Olson. My friend wore a gorgeous, fluffy wedding dress and created her own elegant bouquet. The wedding was yesterday - and it was beautiful, just like the bride. Cameras were clicking at every turn. Congratulations Valerie and Damien Mantzoras!

Yesterday my chef-husband and I attended a marvelous cooking class at Euphemia Haye. Located at the north end of Longboat Key in Sarasota, Florida, the restaurant is renowned for its fine dining and elegant atmosphere. Chef/Owner Ray Arpke led a humorous and insightful session that included delectable dishes such as cannellini bean salad on bruschetta, Italian manicoti/crepes stuffed with homemade ricotta, chicken and veal cannelloni and tiramisu cake. Naturally, each course was thoughtfully paired with complementing wines, provided by Southern Wine and Spirits. Co-Owner D'Arcy Arpke assisted in her fun and ever-inimmitable style. Look for my fun, romantic feature on Anguilla (with lots of shameless celebrity name-dropping) in the June issue of NEXT! magazine, beginning May 31st. It was originally supposed to appear mid-May in a new, upscale magazine entitled, "In". Alas, it's a sign of the times... In has been put on hold until the fall. BUT the editor of In also happens to be the diva of NEXT! - a print publication targeted to Baby Boomers (that would include me!). Circulation is double to triple that of In. Pretty exciting stuff!

The Impossible Dream

A few months ago I attended a class entitled, "Basic Web Design" in the hopes of quickly putting together a website. I had absolutely no experience with HTML, and to me, the workings of the Internet were some obscure form of magic.

Today, afflicted with swollen, bloodshot eyes from hours, days, weeks of coding, my website finally went live!

I registered three domain names, all pointing to the same site. Choose from http://www.codiannefowler.com/

The most profound revelation I experienced during this process is that most of you, apparently, are soooo high-tech. Researching perplexing issues led me to hundreds - no thousands - of solutions from everyday people. Is everyone an expert at coding?!!!

I certainly am not! Perhaps that's why I'm kinda proud of what I've created. Though, a little knowledge is truly a dangerous thing. So, if while perusing my site you come across any anomolies, please let me know!

I plan to celebrate later with a little champagne. Won't you join me? :)

Tropical Shores

Sarasota’s strands are certainly tropical, and perhaps nowhere is it more evident than at Tropical Beach Resorts on Siesta Key. The family of three properties is kick-back casual, but has recently undergone major renovations, bringing true meaning to the term “barefoot elegance”.

I met with manager Dawn Van Lanen a couple of days ago to witness the newest renaissance, that of Tropical Sun. Formerly known for what may be termed “vintage charm”, the property is now a WOW. The renovation includes expansive state-of-the-art suites with whirlpool tubs (the Grand Heron suites), stainless steel kitchen appliances, central AC and all the high-tech necessities – like iPod docking stations, DVD player, voice mail… you get the idea. Even the mid-sized Sandpiper and cozy Hummingbird rooms boast to-die-for amenities. And they are all brand, spanking new. Look for Tropical Sun’s updated website (copy to be written by yours truly) in weeks to come. It’s all so exciting!

Of course, Tropical Shores remains a favorite, but closest to my heart is romantic Sara Sea, especially since I wrote the entire website copy for this newly revamped property with couples in mind. It’s simply, "loverly"!

Who knew that I would ever be a guest on this prestigious show! My radio debut was just weeks ago, talking with The Travel Guy, Roy Lowey, about Ireland.
